The Problem - Indoor Air Pollution According to the Institute of Medicine of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, "Among the various health issues...the problem of indoor airborne allergens is one of the most serious. A high percentage of the population becomes sensitive to indoor allergens and suffers chronic or intermittent allergic disease. Most of the disease conditions can be classified as mild or moderate, but many are severe."Home Air Flows If too little outdoor air enters a home, pollutants can accumulate to levels that can pose health and comfort problems. Unless they are built with special mechanical means of ventilation, homes that are designed and constructed to minimize the amount of outdoor air that can "leak" into and out of the home may have higher pollutant levels than other homes. This is a " sick home" Over the past several decades, our exposure to indoor air pollutants is believed to have increased due to a variety of factors, including the construction of more tightly sealed building materials and furnishings, and the use of chemically formulated personal care products, pesticides, and household cleaners. In recent years, comparative risk studies performed by EPA and its Science Advisory Board (SAB) have consistently ranked indoor air pollution among the top five environmental risks to public health. |
